Late October can be a scary time for attorneys and legal professionals as we head into year-end and 2027. “Math” season doesn’t mean you have to be afraid for what’s around the corner. Yet things can get scary fast, especially if you’ve done the math and decide to go it alone as you seek a new position.

Ghost Postings: That Job Was Filled in August
It’s 11:40 on a Tuesday night, and you’ve found it: a senior associate opening in commercial litigation at a downtown firm that promises “reasonable hours.” You spend an hour reworking your resume then send it. Three weeks later, there’s been no call, no email, and the listing is still up.
There’s a decent chance that seat was filled back in August. Some firms leave old postings up on purpose, so resumes keep coming in. You are left in the dark. A recruiter who talks to hiring teams every week usually can shed light on the situation, often after just one call.
A Firm Can Look Great Online and Still Be Haunted
Firm websites often look alike. You get smiling headshots and a careers page that promises mentorship, collaboration, and transparency.
The website won’t mention that four associates left the group last year, or that the partner running it has one foot out the door. That kind of news travels by word of mouth. Collier Legal Search has been hearing it in Houston since 2003, and when a firm has a retention problem, we usually know well before most people do.
The Lowball Offer – Beware!
Where Resumes Go to Disappear
Online portals can be where good resumes go to disappear. Yours could land behind a couple hundred others or get screened by someone who doesn’t even have too much legal experience.
We send resumes to people we know by name, often someone in firm leadership. Because we’ve sat down with them and know what they’re trying to build, we can usually make the case for you.
It works the other way, too. If a firm keeps interviewing people but never makes an offer, we’ll tell you before you burn three afternoons on callbacks.
Houston's Best Legal Jobs Often Never Get Posted
Houston Isn't the Same Legal Market It Was Five Years Ago
Collier Legal Search turns 23 this year. Our owners grew up in Houston, and they’ve known Texas law firms (and the people who work in them) since long before out-of-state firms started showing up here in big numbers.
If you are job hunting, our background and a keen knowledge of the shifting market matter and remove the fear factor.
Over the years, we have learned how local law firms have continued to expand, how national and international firms keep moving into Houston, and we know how they want to land—each is unique in their growth models. For example, some firms arrive planning a full energy practice group launch. Some are driven to expand here because their clients need Texas lawyers to handle the inflow of commerce, be them litigators or transactional law attorneys. Some are just expanding for expansion-sake. So, we meet with firm leadership directly and ask about practice priorities and long-term plans for the local office. With that, we can tell a candidate whether a Houston office is a real growth bet or an “as of yet to be determined” satellite. We place partners, associates, and accomplished legal staff. All of it starts with relationships and knowing Houston well.
Call Before You Hit Submit – Information Removes the Fear Factor
Our motto is simple: waste no one’s time. Before you apply anywhere, we’d much rather hear from you and arm you with the weaponry of information. Calling us doesn’t commit you to anything. Send a resume or just ask what the market looks like for someone like you right now. A lot of our favorite placements started with a candidate saying, “I’m not sure I’m ready to move yet.” Contact our recruiting team and let’s take the fright out of your job search!
